Pochampally to Welcome Miss World Contestants for Handloom Heritage Experience

In a unique cultural showcase, contestants from around the world participating in the Miss World 2024 pageant will embark on an immersive journey into the heart of Telangana’s heritage, with a special visit to the iconic Pochampally handloom village on May 15. This initiative aims to offer the global participants an intimate experience of India’s age-old weaving traditions and the vibrant artistry that defines Telangana’s cultural identity.

Organized as part of the pageant’s broader cultural outreach, the tour will spotlight Pochampally’s globally acclaimed handloom heritage, which is deeply rooted in tradition and known for its exquisite Ikat patterns, eco-friendly techniques, and vivid colors. Often referred to as the “Silk City of India,” Pochampally has earned a GI (Geographical Indication) tag for its unique weaving style and stands as a symbol of Telangana’s commitment to preserving its artisanal legacy.

The visit is more than just a sightseeing opportunity—it’s a cultural exchange and tribute to Indian craftsmanship, aimed at connecting global audiences with the stories, skills, and spirit of rural artisans. During the tour, Miss World contestants will witness firsthand the meticulous weaving process, interact with local weavers, and learn about the sustainable and community-driven approach behind every fabric.

One of the key highlights of the Miss World celebrations in Telangana will be a grand fashion show that fuses traditional handlooms with contemporary design sensibilities. The event will spotlight Telangana’s signature textiles in a dazzling display of color, creativity, and couture—giving the state’s rich textile narrative an international platform.

Adding to the cultural experience, the contestants and attendees will be treated to a range of traditional folk performances that reflect the soul of Telangana’s performing arts. The lineup will include the energetic Chindu Yakshaganam, a folk theatre form known for its dramatic storytelling; the enchanting melodies of the Kinnera, a rare string instrument played by tribal communities; and the pulsating Rinja performances, showcasing rhythmic precision and cultural flair.

As preparations intensify for the prestigious event set to take place in May, Telangana’s Tourism Secretary Smita Sabharwal visited Pochampally on April 16 to personally review the arrangements and ensure the village is ready to host the global delegation.

“We are thrilled to host the Miss World contestants and present Telangana’s unique handloom legacy and cultural richness on a global stage,” said Smita Sabharwal during her visit.
“This event is a celebration of our artisans’ craftsmanship and the timeless traditions that define Telangana’s identity,” she added.

The state government sees the event as a golden opportunity to boost handloom tourism, promote local artisans on the global stage, and reinforce Telangana’s brand as a culturally rich and globally connected destination.

With the eyes of the world turning to Hyderabad for the Miss World pageant, Telangana is poised to present not just a beauty contest, but a profound cultural journey—celebrating tradition, innovation, and the enduring legacy of its people.
